What is Tenant Coverage?

Tenant Coverage is insurance for renters that provides crucial financial protection against unexpected events and liabilities that could otherwise be financially devastating.

Is Standard Tenant Coverage available for my province?

Tenant Insurance is available to most KOHO members depending on your province of residence. Standard Tenant Coverage is only available to KOHO members in Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia*.

Please note that KOHO members in Quebec will not be eligible for Tenant Coverage.


How do I register for Standard Tenant Coverage?

Open the KOHO app, navigate to the Discover tab, and select Tenant Insurance. From there, you can get a quote and sign up for either Standard or Custom Tenant Coverage.

If you sign up for Standard Tenant Coverage, you can choose your coverage and set the start date for your policy to begin. Monthly payments can be made with your KOHO account balance, debit card, or credit card.


What is covered with Standard Tenant Coverage?

Your Standard Tenant Coverage provides the following benefits:

  • Up to $1,000,000 in Bodily Injury Liability

  • Up to $100,000 in Property Damage Liability

  • Up to $10,000 in Medical Payments

  • Up to $100,000 in Animal Liability

Additionally, you are covered for your Contents based on the tier you select:

  • Tier 1 = $5,000 Contents coverage + $4,000 in additional living expenses

  • Tier 2 = $10,000 Contents coverage + $4,000 in additional living expenses

  • Tier 3 = $15,000 Contents coverage + $4,000 in additional living expenses

Each KOHO member is encouraged to assess their individual needs to determine the most suitable level of Contents coverage for their belongings.


I have a question about the Standard Tenant Coverage, who do I contact?

The easiest way to get information about the Standard Tenant Coverage is by referring to the policy documents for your coverage. You can access your coverage information in the KOHO app by navigating to the Discover tab > Tenant Insurance page.

Where can I see my Standard Tenant Coverage Policy Certificate?

A certificate provides specific details about the tenant's insurance and is often used as proof of insurance for third parties or contains the necessary information for making a claim.

You can access your Policy Certificate in the KOHO mobile app:

  1. Open the KOHO app

  2. Go to the Discover tab, then select Tenant Insurance

  3. Select Certificate


How do I access my Standard Tenant Coverage policy details?

A policy is a document that outlines the insurance coverage provided to the tenant. It includes all the details such as policy limits, deductibles, covered perils, exclusions, and terms and conditions.

You can access your coverage details, billing information and more about your Standard Tenant Coverage policy in the KOHO mobile app:

  1. Open the KOHO app

  2. Go to the Discover tab, then select Tenant Insurance

  3. Scroll down to the Policy details section to find your policy # and coverage details.


How do I make a Standard Tenant Coverage claim?

Claims need to be submitted through the insurance administrator. Claims can be submitted by email to [email protected].

As well, you can access the email address to submit a claim in the KOHO mobile app:

  1. Open the KOHO app

  2. Go to the Discover tab, then select Tenant Insurance

  3. With an active policy, you can initiate a claim by selecting “Make claim”

Note: KOHO cannot assist with claims-related questions as KOHO does not manage or assess claims. This is the sole ownership of the administrator of the insurance product. You should contact the insurance provider directly.


Is there a waiting period for my Standard Tenant Coverage before I can submit a claim?

There are no waiting periods for our Standard Tenant Coverage.


Is there a deductible that I have to pay when I make a claim for my Standard Tenant Coverage?

There is a deductible of $500 for each of the Content coverage tiers available within your Group Tenant coverage offering. For all other claims, including Bodily Injury, Property Damage and Medical Payments, there is no deductible.


Can I upgrade or downgrade my Standard Tenant Coverage coverage?

Unfortunately, you cannot upgrade or downgrade coverage tiers with your Standard Tenant Coverage.

If you would like to change the tier of coverage, we recommend you cancel your current Standard Tenant Coverage, and re-enrol at the end of your billing cycle into your preferred tier. You will have coverage as soon as you enrol.


How do I cancel my Standard Tenant Coverage policy?

Should you wish to cancel your policy and remove your coverage, you can do so by following the steps below:

  1. Open the KOHO app and go to the Discover tab.

  2. Select Tenant Insurance > More

  3. Choose “Cancel policy” to cancel your Tenant Coverage.

Your Standard Tenant Coverage policy for coverage in your home will remain active until the next billing date.


What if I cancel my Standard Tenant Coverage policy before the coverage has started?

By cancelling your Standard Tenant Coverage policy, the coverage in your home will no longer be insured effective immediately. Once your cancellation is confirmed, you will receive a full refund in your KOHO account.


What if I cancel my Standard Tenant Coverage policy within 30 days?

By cancelling your Standard Tenant Coverage policy, the coverage in your home will no longer be insured effective immediately. Your coverage from the start date to now, will also be voided.


Why was my Standard Tenant Coverage policy cancelled?

To ensure your policy remains active, the monthly payment is attempted 3 days before the renewal date. If payment is not made by your renewal date, the Standard Tenant Coverage will be cancelled.

If your insurance was cancelled incorrectly, you can restart Tenant Coverage in the KOHO mobile app 👍

💡 Pro-Tip: To ensure smooth payments, make sure your KOHO balance is adequately funded. For added peace of mind, consider adding a backup payment method so you never run out of coverage.


What if I need to move or end my rental agreement?

We want to ensure the Standard Tenant Coverage works with the changes in your life including a new move. We recommend cancelling your tenant insurance and re-enroling with your new address 👍

To cancel your Standard Tenant Coverage for your current address, follow these steps:

  1. Open the KOHO app and go to the Discover tab.

  2. Select Tenant Insurance > More

  3. Choose “Cancel policy” to cancel your Tenant Coverage.
