What is a Joint account?

Updated this week

Important: Joint accounts are not yet available on all accounts. We’re gradually rolling them out and will notify you once they’re ready for you.

KOHO Joint accounts make it easy to share money with someone you trust, like a partner, roommate, sibling, or friend.

You can set shared savings goals, track spending together, and get alerts when either of you makes a purchase. It's all in one place, and it's free.

🔒 If one of you has the Everything plan on your personal KOHO account, your shared account becomes Joint+, which unlocks access to Cash Back and higher Interest.

If you're new to KOHO, you'll start by opening a Personal account during onboarding. After that, you can create your Joint account right away. Both accounts can be managed in the KOHO mobile app with a single login.

What can I do with a Joint account?

Your Joint account includes:

  • No monthly fees

  • Spend using a virtual Joint card (physical card coming soon)

  • Send free e-Transfers directly from your Joint account

  • Access to Joint Cash Back, Goals, and RoundUps

  • 0.5% Interest if either of you is enrolled in Earn Interest

💡 Joint accounts are only available through the KOHO mobile app. You won’t be able to open or access a Joint account on the KOHO website.

Want more rewards? Get Joint+

If one of you has the Everything plan on your personal KOHO account, your shared account automatically upgrades to Joint+.

That means you both get:

  • 2% Cash Back on groceries, food and drink, and transportation

  • 0.5% Cash Back on everything else

  • 3.5% Interest on your shared balance (if either of you is enrolled in Earn Interest)

🔓 Only one person needs the Everything plan to unlock Joint+ perks for both of you.

How do I invite someone to create a Joint account with me?

In the KOHO app, go to:

Settings > Switch Account > Open a Joint account

Then, enter their email address. They don’t need to be a KOHO member yet; we’ll send them all the info they need to sign up.

I've received a Joint invitation. What should I do?

Click the 'Open account’ button in your invitation email to get started. Or, if your partner shared a QR code with you, scan it to accept and finish setting up your account.

Will I receive a new Joint card?

Yes, you’ll each get a virtual Joint card right away, plus a physical Joint card later (available in November, upon request).

⚠️ Please note that Canada Post service interruptions may impact the delivery or availability of physical Joint cards.

Is there a Joint virtual card?

Yes, you’ll each get a virtual card for your Joint account as soon as it's created.

Make sure you’re viewing your Joint account in-app, then tap the card image on the Home tab.

You’ll both have:

  • A Joint virtual card linked to your shared balance

  • A Personal virtual card linked to your own Personal account balance

How do I load money onto my Joint account?

There are two main ways to add money to your Joint account:

  1. The easiest method is to transfer funds from your Personal account. In-app, tap the $ symbol > Move to Joint

  2. Set up direct deposit to your Joint account

How can I see information related to my Joint account, such as my balance or transactions?

In the KOHO app, go to: Settings > Joint to switch to your Joint account view.

From there, you can check your balance, transactions, and savings.

To switch back to your Personal account, go to Settings > Personal.

Can my Joint partner see my Personal transactions or other information?

Nope, your Joint partner can’t see anything in your Personal account. That includes your balance, transactions, savings, or activity.

Only the Joint account activity is visible to your Joint partner.

My Joint partner only wants a Joint account. Can they do that?

No, your Joint partner will always have their own Personal account in addition to the Joint account. The simplest thing for them to do is simply not use their Personal account if they don't want to.

How many Joint accounts can I have, and how many people can I share a Joint account with?

Each person can only have one Joint account.

Additionally, you can only have one other partner on a Joint account, so that only two people are sharing a Joint account.

Can I make a Joint account with my child?

Children need to be the age of majority (18 or 19, depending on your province) to use any KOHO accounts at this time, including Joint accounts.

Can Joint accounts be used for my business?

No. You can only use Joint accounts for personal use.

Who’s the primary owner on the account?

You both are! With a KOHO Joint account, you both have equal access and control. That means either of you can:

  • Spend from the shared balance

  • Move money into or out of the account

  • Set savings goals or use RoundUps

  • Track transactions and activity in real time

Once money is in your Joint account, it's shared. Either of you can use it.

Can I close a Joint account?

Yes, either one of you can reach out to have your Joint account closed.

Consent is needed from only one party to close the entire Joint account. See our Cardholder Agreement. So again, make sure you're on the same page as the person you're sharing an account with.

What happens to the money when a Joint account is closed?

Whoever closes the Joint account will need to transfer all the money from the Joint account into their Personal account first.

What if one account holder has passed away?

We’re sorry if you’re going through this. To close the account of a deceased Joint account holder, KOHO will need some documents.
