Can I have a refund processed to a cancelled, locked, or expired card?

Updated over a week ago

Cancelled Cards:

Yes 👍 A refund can be processed successfully to a cancelled card number.

When a merchant issues a refund, it’s sent as a merchant credit through the payment network and returned to your KOHO account, not the physical card. Because of this, cancelled cards can still receive refunds.

Refunds usually take 2–3 business days, but in some cases can take up to 5 business days to process. We’re not able to see refunds while they’re pending, but once processed successfully, the funds will appear in-app.

Locked Cards:

If your card is temporarily locked, it will need to be unlocked before the merchant attempts the refund. If a refund is attempted while the card is locked, it may be declined.

If this happens, simply unlock your card and ask the merchant to re-attempt the refund. You can lock or unlock your KOHO card in-app by going to My cards on the Spend screen > Lock card.

If you’re accessing your KOHO account on the web, select the 🔒 lock icon.

Expired Cards

Yes 👍 A refund can still be applied to an expired card. Like cancelled cards, the refund is routed back to your KOHO account rather than the expired card itself.

Refunds on Closed Accounts

Refunds will also be credited to your KOHO account even if the account has been closed.

For example, if an account was closed on January 5 and a refund was issued on January 13, the funds would still be returned successfully.

If you’re not seeing your refund

If your refund hasn’t arrived within the expected timeframe, we recommend reaching out to the merchant to confirm the refund was processed.

If the merchant is unable to help or unresponsive, our team can support you with filing a dispute.
